Qualified Life Events
Qualifying Life Events (QLEs)
When Can I Make Changes to My Benefits?
The benefit elections you make during your new hire enrollment or the annual Open Enrollment period will remain in effect for the full plan year unless you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). A QLE allows you to make mid-year changes to your benefits.
Common Qualifying Life Events
Examples of QLEs include:
- Marriage
- Divorce or legal separation
- Birth, adoption, or placement for adoption
- Change in a spouse’s employment status (e.g., gain or loss of coverage)
- Change in coverage under another employer’s plan or a different plan year
- Death of a dependent
- Change in residence affecting plan eligibility (e.g., moving out of an HMO service area)
- Gaining eligibility for Medicare or Medicaid
- Qualified Medical Child Support Order (QMCSO) or other court order
Documentation Requirements
All QLE requests must be supported by appropriate documentation. This typically includes:
- Proof of the qualifying event (e.g., marriage certificate, birth certificate, divorce decree, loss of coverage letter)
- Date the event occurred
- Names of the employee and/or dependents affected by the QLE
The benefits carrier requires this documentation to approve and process your requested changes. Requests submitted without proper documentation may be denied.
Important Deadline
You must submit your benefit changes within 30 days of the qualifying event. If you miss this deadline, you will not be able to make changes until the next Open Enrollment period.
How to Submit a QLE
- Login to Workday
- From the menu on the left, navigate to Benefits
- Select Update my Benefits to be redirected to PlanSource
- Submit your QLE and upload required documentation
